American Friends of Schneider is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) public charity created solely to support Schneider Children's Medical Center of Israel. While we share the same vision, and work closely together, we are separate legal entities. Under U.S. law, American Friends of Schneider maintains independent discretion and oversight of donated funds.

Israel has more than 40 hospitals, and only a few have been widely championed in the U.S. for decades. Schneider Children's has been Israel's pediatric referral center for more than 35 years, with worldwide research, clinical and professional collaborations. The hospital was first opened due to the vision and generosity of New York philanthropists Helen and Irving Schneider and their family. As the hospital grew to serve 275,000 children annually and expanded its research and specialized care, the Schneider family and hospital leadership recognized the need for broader partnership. American Friends of Schneider was created to build that wider base of support in the U.S.

Schneider Children’s treats approximately 275,000 children each year. The medical center has 304 beds, with 43% dedicated to critical care, including Pediatric Intensive Care, Neonatology, and Burns.

The hospital serves as Israel’s national pediatric referral center for Hematology–Oncology, Endocrinology and Diabetes, Cardiology, and organ and bone marrow transplantation. Schneider Children’s is the only stand-alone pediatric hospital in Israel and the only children’s hospital within Clalit Health Services, Israel’s largest HMO.

In July 2023, the opening of the Glass Building doubled the hospital’s physical footprint, expanding operating rooms, clinics, diagnostic and treatment space, and family-centered care infrastructure.

Schneider Children’s is part of Clalit Health Services, Israel’s largest HMO. At the same time, the hospital serves as the country’s national pediatric referral center for all four HMOs—treating children with the most complex needs regardless of health plan.

Government funding through the HMO system covers standard care. That funding does not cover advanced research, innovation, facility expansion, or comprehensive family support. Philanthropy makes those possible.

Children ages 3-18 are entitled to educational services during their hospitalization at Schneider Children's. The educational team works across 11 departments in the medical center, providing each child with an individualized program built in collaboration with their regular school to help them keep up with their class. The team includes Arabic-speaking teachers to serve all patient populations. In 2025, approximately 9,000 children participated in the hospital school programs. The teachers are employed by Israel's Ministry of Education and work in partnership with Schneider Children's to ensure continuity of learning during treatment.

Schneider Children's conducts advanced pediatric research that directly informs patient care. The hospital’s Advanced Technologies Research Center focuses on translational research—moving discoveries from the lab into clinical practice.

Research spans key pediatric fields including oncology, cardiology, immunology, endocrinology and diabetes, genetic disorders, gastroenterology, and liver disease, and emerging therapeutic approaches. The center supports laboratory research, clinical trials, genomic analysis, and biobanking.

Through academic partnerships and participation in international research networks, Schneider Children's contributes to global pediatric medical knowledge—while improving outcomes for children treated at the hospital today.

Yes. Schneider Children's maintains active medical and research collaborations with leading pediatric institutions in the U.S. and around the world, supporting the global exchange of pediatric knowledge, innovation, and best practices.

The hospital is a member of the European Children's Hospital Organization (ECHO) and Children's Hospitals International Executive Forum (CHIEF), and collaborates with major pediatric centers including Boston Children's Hospital, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Children's National Hospital, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, SickKids (Toronto), Great Ormond Street Hospital, and The Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne and others.

Schneider Children's is affiliated with Tel Aviv University and maintains academic collaborations with the Weizmann Institute of Science, and Reichman University.
