The Heroes Who Make it Happen

When you speak to the Schneider Children’s team about the care they provide, you’ll hear a similar refrain again and again: “above and beyond.” It’s an ethos that reflects not merely the goal of helping every child and their family overcome a disease, but a commitment to every child’s lifelong health and wellbeing. The generous support of American Friends of Schneider make it possible for every child to receive the “above and beyond” care that has come to define Schneider Children’s.

When Shira first heard the word “cancer,” she was too young to fully understand what it meant. The long hospital stays, endless treatments, and the fear in her parents’ eyes soon made it real.

What carried her through were the moments of connection — painting with volunteers, laughing with other kids on her floor, and the quiet reassurance of her doctors who told her she was stronger than she knew.

I remember being scared, but I also remember feeling surrounded by love. That’s what got me through.”

Now, a decade later, Shira is cancer-free and thriving. She’s back in school, loves playing soccer, and spends her weekends volunteering with children who are in treatment — offering the same comfort she once needed. Inspired by her journey, Shira dreams of becoming a pediatric nurse to help kids like her feel less alone.
